Books for Keiki: Okazu at the Zoo

Okazu at the Zoo
by Laurie Ide
Mutual Publishing, $12.95

"Okazu at the zoo, monkeys love it too. He's calling you to put some in his shoe. What do you think you'll do?"
Commence giggling from my Little One. "Monkey, don't put it in your shoe!" she calls out. She pretty much giggles all the way through the book, and then asks to read it again.

This picture book gets silly in all the right ways as two keiki wander around the zoo, sharing snacks with animals big and small. From a ukulele-strumming tiger who loves cone sushi to a tortoise munching Portuguese sausage, the rhyming text and fun illustrations perfectly blend the fanciful and the familiar. The zoo in the book has the look of the Honolulu Zoo, and my daughter loves reading about the foods she sees in shops and restaurants around her, making this definitely a book about home. With a reminder up front to never really feed animals your okazu -or any other food for people- this book is a perfect picture-book read for my keiki, whether we're headed out to the zoo for the afternoon or not.
